The beer industry is filled with all kinds of unique people. One group is the sales representatives, whose job is to represent their home brewery in a range of markets. Today, we want to introduce you to Ben Matya: Sales Manager, Empyrean Brewing.
About the brewery:
“It began with a dream that we could brew full-flavored beer in the great state of Nebraska. In late 1990, that dream became our state’s first brewpub, Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill. Since then demand for our beer has grown, so we expanded our pub and Empyrean Brewing Company was born. Today we still dream big, even while we handcraft our beers in small, flavor–filled batches. So enjoy an Empyrean beer— the taste of dreams come true.”

What’s your history in the industry?

I worked fine wine and beer retail throughout college. I had a passion for customer service and learning more about the history of beer. A position opened up at Empyrean once I graduated in 2002, and I decided to pursue it.

What is a typical day for you?

Early week is company meetings and planning for the upcoming events/travel. I travel roughly 65-75 days a year throughout our 8 state distribution area. Mid-week, I am visiting accounts, distributors, and customers. Late week is samplings, beer dinners, and other events.
I work 24/7 but I don’t consider what I do as work. There is never a dull moment.

What do you look for in your distribution partners?

We aim to have a fun, family-like relationship. As a brewery we need to supply our partners with all the information and tools to succeed. Then the distribution partners can tell our story and present the beers with passion.

How often do you get to sample new beers?

I try to have at least 5 new beers a week. I really enjoy trying new styles and beer from both established and up and coming breweries when I travel.

How can a brewery differentiate itself in the growing market?

Having a solid line up of established beers and developing new exciting styles. Also, your company’s core values and story goes a long way when presenting your brewery to customers.

Tell us a little about your brand.

The ancients believed paradise existed at the highest point in the universe, a fiery sphere they called the Empyrean. We wanted our marketing and advertising to have a theme based around the sun, moon, and stars.

What is your best perk as a brewery rep?

Having the pleasure to have a beer and speak with our customers. Nothing is more satisfying than hearing that a beer you represent is someone favorite.

What is your go-to beer recommendation?

Whatever is in your hand. There are so many great breweries and beers out there. Keep trying something new.

What do you like about your brewery?

We are all one big family. Everyone works so hard to make the best beer possible.

What’s up next for your brewery?

We purchased a large building a few blocks away from our current brewery and we are planning expansion to keep up with the demand.
We will also be adding new exciting beers to our reserve series of beers called Carpe Brewem.

How can we get a tour?

Contact us at the brewery to set one up!
