Repeal Day (A History of Prohibition)
Beer lovers across America will be celebrating Repeal Day on December 5. In honor of one of the most celebrated American beer holidays, we thought we’d catch you up on a little beer history. From January 1920 to December 1933, the manufacture, distribution, or sale of alcohol was briefly declared illegal or prohibited under the Eighteenth Amendment. The prohibition originally passed with the belief it would help greatly reduce social problems related to drunkenness – i.e. poverty, crime, mental illness, etc. However, the prohibition era instead saw an increase in alcohol related crime and public drunkenness. Eventually, the Twenty-First Amendment repealed the Eighteenth Amendment under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
